Researchers ID Mechanism That May Drive Obesity Epidemic

In starvation times, analysts say, pets were much more likely to endure if they could hoard and loosen up their stored energy. According to the new study and experiments done elsewhere in human tissues, RAGE is turned on by the advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), which form when bloodstream sugar combines with proteins or fats-most often in aging, obese and diabetic patients. Other molecules activate RAGE also, such as those released when cells die and spill their contents into intracellular spaces in response to stress. A troubling possibility, says Schmidt, is that lots of proteins and body fat have come to activate “the RAGE break” as they warp and build up (as dangerous oligomers) in individuals who eat even more than their ancestors do.

In both units of experiments, the deletion of RAGE from excess fat cells released the braking mechanisms that restrained energy expenditure.
