What I found was that there was actually a large number of types of programs calling themselves “museum studies” plus some were definitely more up my alley than others. I would like to note that what I wanted/needed in a museum studies program may not be what’s befitting another student. I could continue and on about my specific program, but I believe it might be more useful to simply list what I see as the benefits that I personally produced from it. The chance to participate (for free! A forum to talk about ideas and information about museums and the museum field.

Now, that I’ve made my views pretty much known, Let me specifically address a few of your quarrels! I agree with the fact 100% that the credential is a crap shoot. Especially, as I have already described, as the field becomes glutted, having an MA in Museum Studies is quickly becoming a lot more like having a BA used to be–it is simply a pre-requisite to entry in to the field. Actually, I have kept positions where I would not need been considered had I not kept my level even.

  • Creating share for share and long term partnership strategies
  • How to get started using free themes and basic knowledge of social strategy
  • Managing exterior suppliers
  • Close the Leaver

And they were entry-level positions. The credential is no guarantee of a “good” position right out of college, nor of fast advancement or any advancement in any way even. While what I have mentioned would appear to support your red herring theory just, plus its more a sign of the desire of the field to “professionalize” itself.

My past employers wanted to ensure that I experienced previous understanding of how to care for objects. I really do feel that many years of experience still can overrule or substitute for the qualifications, even in the thoughts of employers. Finally, I’ve several thoughts about the standardization of the field through museum studies programs and the resultant limitations on the prospect of radical change. My first thought is that in the same way all museum studies programs are not created identical, not all certain areas of specicialization within a museum studies program are created identical. The bottom line is, there are certain areas of the museum field that are addressed very effectively by museum studies programs and others that aren’t.

I would claim that exhibition design and development aren’t. Pertinent hands-on skills for choices management, registration, education and administration are easily achieved within the coursework of a museum studies program, but exhibition development is an completely different kettle of fish. To be completely honest, I have not seen a museum studies program that truly handles that aspect of the museum world very well.
